What is an Overspeeding Challan?

An overspeeding challan is a traffic fine issued to a driver when a vehicle is detected traveling above the speed limit set for a particular road. Earlier, traffic police officers would stop drivers and issue fines for overspeeding under Section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Today, in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, traffic authorities use speed cameras and automated speed monitoring systems to detect overspeeding. Once a vehicle is found exceeding the prescribed speed limit, an e-challan is generated and sent to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner.

Breakdown of Current Overspeeding Fine in Delhi

As per the Delhi traffic police website, an overspeeding challan costs Rs 2000 for light motor vehicles like cars.

For medium/heavy vehicles like buses and trucks, the challan amount goes upto Rs 4000.

Beyond these fines, if you’re violating the traffic rules repeatedly, then it would lead to license suspension for at least 3 months.

Note: Driving dangerously is a high penalty category under section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. It can be caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, aggressive overtaking, or ignoring traffic conditions, which results in court challan.

Driving a car at 92 Kmph on highway while ignoring traffic rules and police instructions might seem you can get away with it, but you’d be wrong.

4 Simple Ways To Check and Pay Your OverSpeeding Fine In Delhi

You can check challan status online through 4 ways:

How to Pay an Overspeeding Fine?

If you find pending challans to pay, then there are 2 simple methods for making challan payments:

Online Methods

After checking the status through any of the portals mentioned above, you can click “pay online” for the given challan through debit card, credit card, or net banking. The payment gateway will generate a receipt which you can retain with you for future reference.

Offline Methods

You can visit the nearest traffic police in person, and the address is also printed on the challan receipt and pay for the pending challan in cash or by card at the challan counter.

Alternatively, you can also make payment online through the provided link on Challan receipt. We advise you to keep the official receipt handy for future reference.

Note: When paying the challan amount offline for overspeeding, make sure to carry these documents along, including a printed copy of e challan, vehicle registration certificate, your DL, and a valid photo ID proof.

What would happen if you don’t pay the penalty for Overspeeding?

Here are a few consequences you can face if you ignore paying an e-challan in Delhi -

1. Your DL and Transfer of Vehicle Ownership will be Restricted

Challans aren’t suggestions; these are warnings. If you neither pay nor contest the challan within 90 days, then it will be treated as an acceptance of violation. The matter will then be sent to the Delhi traffic magistrate.

In such a case, you will be unable to transfer the vehicle ownership or renew your vehicle’s registration number.

2. Virtual Court Summons

If you’ve ignored multiple challans in the past, then the matter will be forwarded to virtual court. You will receive summons to appear, and police officials can seize your vehicle if you've been caught violating traffic rules.

3. Increases Legal Penalties and License Suspension

Persistent non-payment of challans can lead to suspension of your driving license or issuance of a non-bailable warrant, especially if you're a habitual offender (as per Sections 13 & 145 of BNS 2023).

4. Seizure of Vehicle

If you’re loaded with a history of unpaid challans and pending court summons, then traffic police will take away your vehicle.

How Can You Avoid Overspeeding Fine On Delhi Roads?

Here are a few simple rules to keep in mind to avoid overspeeding fines -

1. Obey Speed Limit Signs On Road

Always keep an eye on speed limit indicators; for example, if you see a red ring sign on the road, then it’s for maximum speed, and you need to adhere to the rules. But always make sure that the speed limit changes based on the zone.

For example, if you’re driving 40 km/hr on flyovers, then you need to drop the speed to 30 km/hr or stay within the prescribed speed limit.

2. Follow a 5% Buffer Rule

The tolerance limit of speed cameras is 5%. If you’re driving in a 60Km/hr zone and you cross 63 km/hr, the camera usually triggers and issues the challan. That’s why we’d recommend you drive below that limit.

3. Watch for Camera Signs

Be cautious while driving in areas where cameras are installed, especially at intersections, arterial roads, and the exits of flyovers. These cameras can detect not just overspeeding but also violations, including red light jumping, and lead to issuance of challan.

4. Avoid Speedometer Errors

Don’t always rely on the car’s analog speedometer, as it can be inaccurate most times. Even driving 2-3 km/hr above the prescribed limit can trigger an automated e-challan.

5. Use Cruise Control or Speed Alerts

Set your vehicle’s cruise control when you exceed a set speed, such as 45 km/hr, when driving on 50km/hr roads. This is handy generally for long drives.
