Types of Challans That Are Eligible to Be Settled in Lok Adalat

All types of challans are not eligible to be settled in the Lok Adalat in Haryana. Only challans which are compoundable and minor issues can be presented before the court- 

Eligible (Compoundable): 

• Over speeding

• No parking

Ways to Settle Traffic Challans in Haryana and NCR – Step-by-Step Procedure

There are two different types of methods that are used to settle traffic challans in Haryana- 

Online Method- 

If your challan is still pending and not sent to court, you can directly pay it through the Parivahan Sewa or Haryana Police e-challan portal. This option is usually available for simple and compoundable traffic violations, and the case gets closed immediately after payment. We have mentioned the detailed steps on how to settle via Parivahan Sewa. 

Step 1 – You can visit the website of Parivahan Sewa or the Haryana Police e- challan portal. Enter your vehicle number or challan number. Check whether your challan is pending, sent to court, eligible for Lok Adalat, or already paid.  

Step 2- Verify the offence details and pay online via UPI, debit card, or net banking. 

Step 3- Save or print the payment confirmation receipt for future reference. Check the Parivahan portal after 48-72 hours. If the challan is still pending after 7 days, mail the traffic police for your payment receipt to request an update. 

If the challan status shows “sent to court” or “under court processing”, it cannot be paid normally on Parivahan. In such cases, the challan must be resolved through the virtual court system, where you can either accept the offence and pay the fine online or contest the challan before the traffic magistrate. 

Step 1- Visit the Virtual Courts portal.

 Step 2- Select Haryana Traffic Department.

Step 3- If the challan appears, you can pay the fine online, without visiting any physical location.

Offline Method-

If the challan shows the status as sent to the traffic court. Here are the steps mentioned below. 

Step 1 - You can visit the website of Parivahan Sewa or the Haryana Police e- challan portal. Enter your vehicle number or challan number. Check whether your challan is pending, sent to court, eligible for Lok Adalat, or already paid. 

Step 2- If the status is showing ‘sent to court’.  

• Note the court date and time. 
• Visit the mentioned traffic court on time

• Pay the fine as ordered by the magistrate, 

Step 3- Collect the payment receipt and save it for future reference.

Step 4- Book the slot beforehand, visit the designated court during the specified hours before the Lok Adalat session, and take your token. In Haryana, only the offline booking is allowed for a token.  

Step 5- Go to the district court that is mentioned in your challan. Ensure you arrive early as the gates open at 9:30 a.m. Prior to booking of a slot is mandatory. 

Step 6 – Present your challan details and documents (DL, RC, challan copy, and ID proof) before the Lok Adalat officer or judge. They will review the case and may allow settlement or reduction of the traffic penalty. 

Step 7 – If the settlement is approved, you will be asked to pay the reduced fine amount at the court payment counter or through the available payment method. 

Step 8 – After payment, you will receive a receipt confirming the settlement, and your challan will be marked as closed in the system. This completes the Challan settlement process.

What is a Contested Challan? 

A contested challan refers to a situation where the vehicle owner or driver disagrees with the traffic violation mentioned in the challan and decides to legally challenge it instead of paying the fine. This usually happens when the person believes the challan was issued incorrectly, the vehicle number was wrongly recorded, the violation did not occur, or there is an error in the penalty amount.  

In such cases, the challan cannot be simply paid online or settled directly; it must be taken to the traffic court or the concerned authority for review. The driver can present evidence such as photographs, dashcam footage, GPS records, or witness statements to prove that the challan was wrongly issued. After reviewing the case, the court may cancel the challan, reduce the penalty, or uphold the original fine depending on the evidence provided. 

How to Challenge a Traffic Challan (Step-by-Step)

Step 1 – Check the status of your challan online. Visit the Parivahan Sewa portal or the Haryana Police e-challan website and enter your vehicle number or challan number to view the details. This will help you confirm whether the challan is pending, already paid, or sent to court. 

Step 2 – Gather all supporting evidence if you believe the challan was wrongly issued. This may include CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, GPS data, location history, photographs, or witness statements that prove the violation did not occur or that the vehicle was wrongly identified. 

Step 3 – Visit the traffic court or the district court mentioned in the challan notice. Inform the court staff that you want to contest the challan and file an objection before the traffic magistrate. You may be required to submit a written explanation along with your evidence.
